How much is too much and is there “too much” in accessorizing of your home? There is limit for sure, in the following list you will find a couple of items that are not just nice souvenirs that you can get from your travels but also overdoing with them can turn your cozy home into crowded museum of kitsch.

  • Cups. One, two or ten of them can be useful but keeping a cup from every journey for the past fifteen years may turn your shelves, cabinets and living room surfaces into piled displays. You buy souvenirs for the memory; don’t let them overtake your life.

  • Hats. If you are not Alice’s Mad Hatter, leave these in the wardrobe. Although they are easy to find, some hats should be kept only for mask parties and Halloween. Avoid them in your interior if you don’t want to create a focal point with just a couple of them.

  • Shiny star. People collect souvenirs not only from places but also from events and with the face of their favorite celebrity. The last ones are forbidden for everybody that claim good taste and are over fifteen year old. Elvis, Marilyn, Diana and the royal family are popular images for everything from ashtrays to decorative plates and t-shirts. It doesn’t mean that they should cover your home and wardrobe. Love them but limit their “physical” presence in your interior if you don’t want to look creepy in the eyes of the end of tenancy cleaners.

  • Religious symbols. No one says religion is bad thing but should you state your love for God in thousand statues and icons? If you meet and have guests from different cultures and religions choose a place in the house that is not so much on display to worship your God. If you don’t want to impose your religion and believing, try to keep religious souvenirs and art in your private space – a corner in the bedroom is possibility.

  • Stuffed animals. Cute Mickey Mouse is not what is meant here. Even if you are big fan of hunting or fishing, trophies are not good idea if you don’t have a mansion and enough place to give them proper display. Also their maintenance requires special cares that domestic cleaning doesn’t cover.

Souvenirs are good thing but don’t turn them into obsession or “dust-collectors”. Use them sparingly and they can be nice little touch of special moment or far away land.
