How to understand if your gold jewellry is real
Do you want to find out if your gold jewellry is real? The best way is to take it to a professional jeweller. That’s how you will have a full guarantee. But maybe you want to understand it right now – at home? You can do some tests. Take a look at the following methods:

  • Use a magnet – remember that gold is not attracted by magnets. If the jewel is attracted by the magnet, then it means that it is not gold. Of course, you should know that there are metals, which are used for making counterfeiting of gold and they are not attracted by magnets, too. This means that this method may not give you completely sure guarantee;

  • Visual examination of gold – take a closer look of the jewel that you want to check. It must have an official marker, called a titer. This print will show you the purity of gold that was used. Note that some older gold jewelry doesn’t have it. But there is something important – some fake gold jewelry can also have marking, so you should use some other methods for checking gold, too. Other suitable way for visual examination is looking for changing the colour of the jewel. Take a look at the edges and other places which are subject to friction. If you see areas, where the gold color is gone, and there is another material, revealed at the bottom, the jewel is just gold-plated;

  • Verification by nitric acid – this is the method by which the professionals make verification of gold. Make a small scratch somewhere where it won't be seen and put a drop of nitric acid. If nitric acid goes in green colour, the jewel is just gold-plated. If the colour is milky, it is probably silver, which is gold-plated. If there is no colouring, the jewel is probably real.

If you want to bring back the splendour of your gold, mixture a few drops of washing detergent and table mineral water. Let the jewelry stay in the water for 5 min. Then take a soft toothbrush and clean the gold. Don‘t miss any part of it! Accurately rinse with warm water and wipe the jewel with a soft cloth. We advise you to run this procedure regularly. Just like everything else, your gold jewelry needs maintenance in order to be beautiful and shiny longer!
