The place where you and your family spend most of your time (after the kitchen) is the living room. What is essential for it is to be comfortable and stylish so you could enjoy your time when you watch TV on the couch or you watch your children play. And what is the most important furniture in the room? Right, the sofa! It should be “perfect” – big enough but not taking over the place, stylish, with nice upholstery that is easy for maintenance and last but not least it should be affordable so you don’t spend a fortune on just a single piece.

  • Where to look for it? Annual or seasonal sales, flea market, online websites and even friends exchange networks. Many people today try the last method – it’s swap of pieces of furniture clothes or books. Sometimes what you don’t need is what someone else exactly is looking for.

  • How big it should be? Look more at the seat and in the length, if you have small living room is better to look for models that need less unusable space, I think you know what I mean – too bulky back and side parts that you can’t use. And usually the larger is the sofa, the more expensive it is. Consider the size of your room.

  • What material it should be made of? Fabric or leather, both vary in prices and of course the leather is more costly and needs specific treatment. With the fabric you have more colour options and the process of cleaning upholstery won’t make you spend a fortune for detergents and special instruments and tissues.

  • Tufting and fluffing – from maintenance and price point of view, the more tufting and fluffing your sofa has originally, the more money you will spend for the purchase and the cleaning. Better add them separately with cushions and top or blanket. Tufting can easily collect allergens and crumbs, so if you have children it’s better to have cover that can be washed and put back on.

  • Synthetics or natural fibers – one more look at the upholstery. Synthetics (acrylic, nylon and microfibers) are more durable, cost-effective and resist wrinkles. Natural fabrics (cotton, silk, wool, and linen) are more expensive and need special treatment. Look for maintaining instructions whichever upholstery you choose, some may require procedures similar to dry carpet cleaning. If you take the right care for your sofa, it will pay its price in time.

In conclusion: one of the cheapest sofa options that you can get is synthetic upholstery sofa with not too big arms and back without tufting, bought on a sale or second hand. Good luck in the couch hunt!
